The madrasa was founded in 1537 by Gazi Husrev Bey and stands directly opposite his masjid. Sarajevans call it Kuršumlija, 'the lead-roofed', after the lead sheets that once covered its domes. For centuries it was the leading school of Islamic learning in Bosnia. It follows the classic Ottoman plan, with student rooms arranged around an arcaded courtyard, each under its own small dome, and a larger domed lecture hall. Today it houses the Gazi Husrev Bey Museum, which tells the story of his life and of the mosque, library, hamam, inns and markets he endowed, and visitors can walk through the courtyard and rooms.
