About Baščaršija Masjid, Sarajevo

The Baščaršija Masjid, also known as the Havadže Durak Masjid, stands in the middle of Sarajevo's old bazaar and is one of the oldest mosques in the city, already recorded in 1528. It has a single dome, an open porch under small cupolas and a stone minaret, beside a little courtyard with a fountain and tall poplars. The mosque was badly damaged in the war of 1992-95 and has since been restored, most recently with help from Turkey's Directorate General of Foundations, and it was declared a national monument in 2006. The call to prayer from its minaret carries across the Baščaršija, a few steps from the Sebilj fountain.
