The old fortress of Krupa stands on a cliff above the river Una in the centre of Bosanska Krupa. First mentioned in the thirteenth century, it was held by Croatian nobles and passed to the crown in 1456. After the Ottoman conquest of Bosnia in 1463 it became one of the main frontier strongholds guarding the approach to Bihać, and it held out against sieges in 1509 and 1522-23. In June 1565 an Ottoman army under Mustafa Pasha Sokolović, the sanjakbey of Bosnia, besieged the fortress for about three weeks until its small garrison was overcome, and Krupa became part of the Ottoman frontier of the Bosnian Krajina. A short path with information boards climbs to the surviving walls and tower, and the top gives fine views over the town, the river and the mosque and churches below.
