The Fethija began as a Gothic church in medieval Bihać, dating back to the thirteenth century. After the Ottomans took the town in 1592 it was converted into a mosque and named Fethija, 'of the conquest', and a minaret was added. It is unusual among Bosnian mosques for keeping its tall pointed Gothic windows and its long rectangular hall. It stands in the town centre near the river Una and the Captain's Tower, and it is a national monument and an active mosque.
