About Brekovica Masjid, Bihać

Brekovica is a village on the left bank of the river Una, a short drive north of Bihać. Its mosque serves the local congregation (džemat), which belongs to the Islamic Community's council in Bihać, and it hosts regular gatherings, among them an annual evening of Qur'an recitation. On the steep hill above the village stand the ruins of the old town of Brekovica, first recorded in 1330. It belonged to Croatian noble families and then to the Habsburg captains of Bihać, was left deserted under a border agreement in 1625, and about ten years later was repaired by the Ottomans, who kept a garrison there until the 1830s. The mosque makes a quiet stop on a drive through the Una valley around Bihać.
