About Bužim Fortress

Bužim Fortress, in the far north-west of Bosnia, was built in the Middle Ages and came under Ottoman rule in 1576. It then became one of the key frontier fortresses of the Bosnian Krajina, facing the Habsburg lands, with a garrison of horsemen and foot soldiers and, after the conquest, a stone mosque built inside the walls. Christian armies attacked it several times in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries without holding it. The inner castle with its round towers and the outer walls with artillery platforms survive in part. It is a national monument and is open at all times.
