Bobovac was the main fortified seat of the Kotromanić kings of Bosnia from the fourteenth century, built on a steep ridge in the hills near Vareš. The royal crown was kept here, and several kings were buried in its chapel. In 1463 the fortress fell to the army of Sultan Mehmed II, al-Fatih, and the medieval Bosnian kingdom came to an end, opening four centuries of Ottoman rule. The ruins of walls, towers and the royal mausoleum stand in the forest today, reached by a footpath, and a caretaker often explains the site to visitors.
