Šerefudin's White Masjid stands on the site of an old mosque in Visoko that dated back to the fifteenth century. In 1980 it was rebuilt to a design by the Bosnian architect Zlatko Ugljen, and in 1983 it won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, becoming one of the most admired mosques of the modern era. Ugljen reinterpreted the traditional Bosnian mosque in white concrete and plaster. Light falls into the prayer hall through openings in the roof, the slender minaret is shaped like a sharpened pencil, and the mihrab, minbar and fittings are simple and refined. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times.
