The Great Mosque of Tarim stands in the market at the heart of the town and has long been the main congregational mosque of Tarim, the city of scholars. It has been rebuilt and enlarged several times to hold the crowds who come for Friday prayers. The building has a pale facade with rows of windows, and the al-Ahqaf Manuscript Library, which holds thousands of manuscripts gathered from Tarim's family libraries, is housed in the mosque complex.
