The Great Mosque of Mawza was built in 771 AH by the jurist Jamal al-Din Muhammad al-Khatib al-Mawza'i during the Rasulid period, with the support of a royal patron. It is the main historic landmark of the town of Mawza, inland from Mokha. The mosque is built of brick and plaster with a roof of domes, crenellated walls and a tall cylindrical minaret, and its arched doorways and prayer halls keep their old form.
