Al-Qahira Citadel stands on a spur of Jabal Sabir above the old city of Taiz. A fortress was built here by the Sulayhids in the eleventh century, and it was greatly enlarged by the Rasulids, who made Taiz their capital, and later by the Ottomans and the imams. The citadel's walls, towers, gates and cisterns climb the hillside in terraces, with sweeping views over Taiz. It has been under restoration in recent years, and the Ashrafiyya and Muzaffar mosques lie below it in the old city.
