About Al-Shadhili Mosque

This is the mosque and grave of Ali ibn Umar al-Shadhili (d. 828 AH), the scholar and Sufi of Mokha who is remembered as the man who made coffee popular, encouraging his students to drink it to stay awake for night prayers and remembrance. Mokha went on to give its name to the coffee it shipped to the world. The mosque is the oldest landmark of the old port town, with a prayer hall covered by nine domes and a tall minaret that can be seen from far across the coastal plain. It was restored and enlarged in 1399 AH, and carved decoration survives on its wooden ceiling.
