Al-Janad Mosque is counted as the second mosque of Yemen after the Great Mosque of Sana'a. Tradition holds that it was founded in the time of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ by the Companion Mu'adh ibn Jabal, whom the Prophet ﷺ sent to Yemen to teach the people and judge between them, and that Mu'adh prayed the first Friday of Rajab here, a day still marked by visitors. The mosque has been rebuilt and enlarged many times, including under the Umayyads and Abbasids. It follows the plan of the Prophet's Mosque, with a large open courtyard surrounded by arcades and a tall minaret, and stands in the village of al-Janad, about 20 km north-east of Taiz.
