Sayyid Muhammad al-Zamzami al-Kattani was a son of the great Moroccan scholar Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Kattani and a brother of Muhammad al-Makki al-Kattani. He travelled with his family from Morocco to the Hijaz and Damascus, where the Kattanis became one of the leading scholarly households of the city. He is buried in the Kattani family plot in the Bab al-Saghir cemetery, near his brother and his nephew.
