Shaykh Muhammad Badr al-Din al-Hasani was the leading hadith scholar of Syria in his time, known as Muhaddith al-Sham. A descendant of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ through Sayyiduna al-Hasan, from a family of Moroccan origin, he was born in Damascus in 1850 and taught for decades at Dar al-Hadith al-Ashrafiyyah and in the Umayyad Mosque, where crowds came to his lessons. Most of the great Damascene scholars of the next generation studied with him. He passed away in 1935 and was buried in the family plot in the Bab al-Saghir cemetery, beside which a mosque and school bear his name. His son, Shaykh Taj al-Din al-Hasani, who served as President of Syria, is buried nearby.
