This long stretch of Córdoba's western wall runs beside Calle Cairuán, from the Puerta de Almodóvar towards the Alcázar. It closed the western side of the medina, and its stone ramparts and towers are among the best-preserved parts of the city's medieval defences. Outside the wall, a walk with a water channel and gardens was laid out in the 1960s, and on 27 May 1968 the street was named after Kairouan in Tunisia, which had been twinned with Córdoba and whose great mosque shares many features with Córdoba's. The statues of Seneca by the Puerta de Almodóvar and of Ibn Rushd further along stand beside the walk.
