This statue honours al-Hakam II, the second caliph of Córdoba, who ruled from 961 to 976. A great lover of books, he gathered a library said to have held some 400,000 volumes, with agents buying manuscripts for him in Cairo, Baghdad, Damascus and Alexandria, and he enlarged the Great Mosque, adding the mihrab and maqsura whose mosaics are still its greatest treasure. The statue was unveiled in 1976, a thousand years after his passing. It stands in the Campo Santo de los Mártires beside the Alcázar and the Baths of the Caliphal Alcázar, which were built in his reign.
