The Monument to the Lovers remembers the poet Ibn Zaydun (1003–1071) and the poet Wallada bint al-Mustakfi, daughter of the Umayyad caliph Muhammad III, two of the great literary figures of eleventh-century Córdoba. Wallada held a literary gathering in her home in the city, and the verses the two wrote to each other are among the best known of al-Andalus. It was unveiled in 1971, designed by the architect Víctor Escribano Ucelay with sculpture by Pablo Yusti Conejo, and takes the form of a small temple of four columns under a little roof, with two carved hands reaching towards each other on the pedestal. A poem by each of them is carved in marble in Spanish and Arabic. It stands in the Campo Santo de los Mártires, near the Alcázar.
