The Bather is a small bronze figure set on Calle Cara in Córdoba, in front of the old Pescadería baths, and it alludes to the bathhouse behind it. The baths were a public hammam of the caliphal period, built in the tenth century and renovated in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and they were declared a historic monument in 1954. Verses by Ibn Shuhayd, the Córdoba poet of the Umayyad era, are carved on the base and speak of the beauty of the baths and of the evening light in the skylights of their ceiling. The baths are closed to the public while their restoration is planned, but the statue and the building can be seen from the street, a short walk east of the Great Mosque.
