The Archaeological Museum of Córdoba occupies the Palacio de los Páez de Castillejo, a sixteenth-century Renaissance mansion, together with a modern building beside it. Its collections run from prehistory to the late Middle Ages, and its rooms on al-Andalus are among the richest in Spain, with pieces from Madinat al-Zahra, caliphal capitals, ceramics, coins, inscriptions and objects of daily life, including the inscription that records the founding of the mosque of San Juan. In the basement visitors walk among the excavated remains of the Roman theatre of Corduba. The museum is on the Plaza de Jerónimo Páez, a few minutes' walk north-east of the Great Mosque.
