The Royal Stables were built in 1570 on the orders of Philip II to breed the Spanish purebred horse, the origin of the Andalusian horse. They stand next to the Alcázar and housed stallions for the Spanish army until 1995, when the unit moved to Écija. Visitors can see the long stable hall, which the poet Federico García Lorca called the cathedral of horses, and equestrian shows are held regularly in the riding arena.
