The town of al-Kifl takes its name from this shrine, which Muslims honour as the grave of Nabi Dhul-Kifl and which is also identified with the prophet Ezekiel, known in Arabic as Hizqil. Jewish pilgrims came here for centuries, and travellers such as Benjamin of Tudela described the shrine in the Middle Ages. The tomb chamber, with Hebrew inscriptions on its walls, sits beside a mosque, and a slender brick minaret from the Ilkhanid period in the early fourteenth century stands over the complex. The shrine has been restored in recent years and lies on the Euphrates between Hillah and Kufa.
