This shrine stands at Borsippa, beside the ruined ziggurat known as Birs Nimrud, about 15 kilometres south-west of Hillah. Local tradition holds that Nabi Ibrahim was born in this region, and that it was here that Nimrud had him thrown into the fire, which Allah made cool and safe for him. The maqam is a small domed building at the foot of the great mound, whose vitrified brick summit can be seen from far across the plain. The site is close to the ruins of ancient Babylon and the shrines of Nabi Ayyub.
