This shrine north of Kufa is honoured as the grave of Sayyid Ahmad, a son of al-Hasan al-Muthanna and grandson of Imam al-Hasan. In 144 AH the caliph al-Mansur seized many of al-Hasan al-Muthanna's family and held them in his prison at al-Hashimiyya near Kufa, where most of them passed away. The shrine stands in the farmland of the Abu Hadari area, a few kilometres from the Great Mosque of Kufa.
