Serjilla is the best preserved of the Dead Cities of Jabal al-Zawiya, the late Roman and Byzantine villages of north-western Syria inscribed by UNESCO. Built of limestone between the fourth and sixth centuries, it gives a rare picture of village life in the countryside of that period. Its bathhouse, meeting hall, houses, olive presses and tombs still stand to roof height in places. The site lies near the village of al-Bara, south-west of Idlib, and is best visited in spring.
