Ebla, at Tell Mardikh south-west of Aleppo, was one of the earliest kingdoms of Syria and a great trading power in the third millennium BC. Its discovery showed that ancient Syria was a centre of civilisation alongside Egypt and Mesopotamia. In the 1970s archaeologists found the royal archive of about 17,000 clay tablets in its palace. The low mound with its excavated walls and gates can be visited.
