The citadel of Ma'arrat al-Nu'man stands on a rocky spur above the seasonal Hermas valley. It goes back to the Roman period and was rebuilt in Islamic times, when it served as the refuge of the people of Ma'arra. It was besieged in 1098 during the First Crusade. The citadel lies at the edge of the modern town, about 500 metres from the old centre, and its walls and gates, including the Aleppo Gate, can still be traced. The grave of Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri and the town's museum are nearby.
