Al-Bara is one of the largest of the Dead Cities, the late-Roman and Byzantine towns of the limestone hills of northern Syria that UNESCO lists as the Ancient Villages of Northern Syria. It flourished between the fourth and sixth centuries on olive farming and trade, and the remains of its houses, villas and presses are spread through the olive groves of Jabal al-Zawiya. Its best-known monuments are the pyramid-roofed tombs, carved with acanthus decoration, that stand among the fields. The modern village of al-Bara lies alongside, and the smaller site of Serjilla is a few kilometres to the east.
