Bab Sharqi, the Eastern Gate, is the only Roman gate of Damascus still standing in its original form, with a large central arch for caravans and two smaller arches on either side for people on foot. It stands at the eastern end of the Straight Street that runs across the old city. In 14 AH, during the conquest of Damascus, the forces of Khalid ibn al-Walid entered the city through this gate, while Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah entered from the west by agreement. Today it is a lively entrance to the eastern quarters of the old city.
