Imam al-Husayn ibn ʿAli (RA) was the beloved grandson of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ through Sayyidah Fāṭimah al-Zahrāʾ and Sayyiduna ʿAli ibn Abi Talib (RA), and the younger brother of Imam al-Hasan (RA). He is remembered for his devotion, courage and principled stand against injustice. He was martyred with members of his family and companions at Karbala in 61 AH/680 CE, and his body was buried there. The historic maqam inside the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus marks the place where the blessed head of Imam al-Husayn is traditionally believed to have been kept after the captives of the Ahl al-Bayt were brought from Karbala to Damascus. The chamber is situated in the eastern section of the mosque and is commonly known as Mashhad al-Husayn or Maqam Raʾs al-Husayn. It is also associated with Imam ʿAli Zayn al-ʿAbidin, who is traditionally said to have prayed there during the family’s detention in Damascus.
