The Grand Serail of Aleppo was built between 1928 and 1933 as the city's main government building and opened in April 1933. It served as the seat of the provincial government until 2008, when the new city council building opened. The three-storey building occupies the site facing the entrance of the Aleppo Citadel across the citadel square, with the Sultaniyya Madrassa to its west, the Utrush Mosque to the south and Hammam Yalbugha to the east, among the historic monuments that surround the citadel.
