At the Conquest of Makkah in Ramadan 8 AH, Nabi Muhammad ﷺ entered the city with ten thousand Companions, and at his instruction his banner was planted at al-Hajun, on the northern side of Makkah near Jannat al-Mu'alla. Masjid al-Rayah, the Mosque of the Banner, marks that place. The present building is a modest neighbourhood mosque in the al-Hujun area, a short walk from Masjid al-Jinn and Jannat al-Mu'alla. It is a fitting place to remember how the Prophet ﷺ returned to the city that had driven him out, entering it with humility and forgiving its people.
