About Jannat al-Mu'alla Graveyard

Jannat al-Mu'alla is the ancient cemetery of Makkah, on the slopes of al-Hajun to the north of Masjid al-Haram. Members of the Prophet's ﷺ family were buried here long before Islam, and it holds the graves of Sayyidah Khadijah, his first wife, and their son Sayyiduna al-Qasim, as well as his grandfather Abd al-Muttalib, his uncle Abu Talib and other members of Banu Hashim. Many Companions and later Muslims were buried here too, including Asma' bint Abi Bakr and her son Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr. The domes that once stood over the main graves were removed in the 1920s. The cemetery is still in use and lies about a kilometre from the Haram, and visitors can view the older section from its paths and railings.
