Al-Muftaha is a cultural village in the centre of Abha that grew into the city's arts quarter in the early 1990s, built in the Asiri style with painted walls and murals by local artists along its lanes. It houses the King Fahd Cultural Centre and the Talal Maddah Theatre, one of the largest theatres in Saudi Arabia. Artists' studios and galleries, craft and honey shops and cafés open in the afternoons and evenings, and the old Tuesday market nearby sells local produce and handicrafts. The village is run by the Ministry of Culture as a centre for visual arts, photography and traditional crafts.
