Bilal ibn Rabah, one of the first Muslims, endured great hardship in Makkah for his faith and became the first muezzin of Islam, calling the adhan in Madinah throughout the lifetime of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ. His house stood in the city west of the mosque. The site lies a few hundred metres south-west of Masjid al-Nabawi, in the area of Masjid al-Ghamamah, and is marked on a specialist map of the houses of the Companions.
