About Egyptian Takiyya (Madinah)

The Egyptian Takiyya was the best known of the eight takiyyas of Ottoman Madinah, a public kitchen built by Ibrahim Pasha in the time of his father Muhammad Ali Pasha, in al-Manakhah on the left of those entering the city by Bab al-Anbariyyah. It measured about 89 by 50 metres and was roofed with domes to protect it from fire, with stores, ovens and a kitchen. Wheat, rice and other provisions came every year from its endowments in Egypt, and bread and soup were given out daily to the poor, about 800 of them a day in 1321 AH (1903). The building no longer stands. Its site lies about one kilometre south-west of Masjid al-Nabawi, close to the site of Bab al-Anbariyyah.
