Lahore Junction railway station was built in 1859–60, soon after the uprising of 1857, and was designed to serve as a fort as well as a station. The contractor was Mian Muhammad Sultan, who also built much of colonial Lahore. The red-brick building has crenellated towers, turrets and loopholes for guns, and it is one of the grandest colonial railway buildings in South Asia. It remains the main station of the city, a short distance east of the Walled City.
