Jerash is the ancient Gerasa, one of the best preserved Roman provincial cities in the world. It remained a living town under the Umayyads, who built a congregational mosque beside its main street, until the great earthquake of 749. The site includes Hadrian's Arch, the oval forum, the colonnaded Cardo, two theatres and the great temples, and the Umayyad mosque and houses can be seen along the main street. The modern town of Jerash lies to the east.
