Ajloun Castle, known in Arabic as Qal'at al-Rabad, was built in 580 AH (1184) by Izz al-Din Usama, one of the commanders of Salah al-Din, to guard the iron mines of Ajloun and the routes into the Jordan Valley. It was enlarged in the following decades and restored by the Mamluks. The castle crowns a hill above the town of Ajloun, with views over the Jordan Valley, and a small museum displays finds from the site.
