The Great Mosque of Ajloun dates from the Ayyubid and Mamluk period of the thirteenth century, when Ajloun grew around its castle. It is built on the site of an earlier church, and its square stone minaret is one of the landmarks of the town. The mosque stands in the centre of Ajloun, below the castle on the hill to the west, and has been restored in recent decades. The shrine of Sayyidi Badr is nearby.
