Al-Sharif al-Murtada, Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Musawi, was a descendant of Imam Musa al-Kazim and one of the greatest Shia theologians and jurists of Baghdad. A student of al-Shaykh al-Mufid and elder brother of the poet al-Sharif al-Radi, he led the scholars of Baghdad after his teacher until he passed away in 436 AH. He was first buried in his house in Karkh and later moved to Karbala, beside the shrine of Sayyiduna al-Husayn. This maqam beside the Kadhimiya shrine honours him and his brother, with a mosque for prayer and a window onto the tomb chamber. It stands in the market lanes on the south-east side of the shrine.
