Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Nu'man, known as al-Shaykh al-Mufid, was the leading Shia theologian and jurist of Baghdad in the Buyid period. He taught in the Karkh quarter, wrote some two hundred works on theology, law and history, and trained al-Sharif al-Murtada and al-Shaykh al-Tusi. He passed away in 413 AH. He is buried inside the shrine of Imam Musa al-Kazim and Imam Muhammad al-Jawad at Kadhimiya, near the feet of Imam al-Jawad. His teacher Ibn Qulawayh lies beside him, and visitors pass his grave on the way round the sanctuary.
