About Grave of Jamal al-Din al-Khal‘i

Jamal al-Din Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Khal‘i al-Mawsili was a medieval Muslim scholar and poet who became particularly celebrated for his devotion to the Ahl al-Bayt. Originally associated with Mosul, he spent part of his life in Karbala before settling in al-Hillah, where he joined the city's flourishing scholarly and literary community. Much of his surviving poetry is devoted to praising the family of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ and mourning Imam Husayn ibn Ali, earning him lasting recognition as one of the poets of the Ahl al-Bayt. Traditional accounts surrounding al-Khal‘i's life describe a profound spiritual transformation that strengthened his attachment to Imam Husayn and the Ahl al-Bayt, although some details of these stories belong to later devotional tradition rather than firmly established biography. He died in al-Hillah, and his grave became a recognised place of visitation. His shrine remains in the city today, close to the tomb of the poet Ibn Hammad, and preserves the memory of a figure whose religious poetry remained influential long after his death.
