The 17 Ramadan Mosque on Firdos Square in Karrada is one of the landmark mosques of modern Baghdad. Its foundation stone was laid in the reign of King Ghazi in the late 1930s and it was completed in 1959. Its name recalls the 17th of Ramadan, the day of the Battle of Badr. The mosque covers about 5,000 square metres and holds around 2,500 worshippers beneath a large tiled dome and a single minaret, and its interior is richly decorated with tilework and carved wood.
