The Freedom Monument (Nasb al-Hurriya) is the best-known modern monument in Iraq, the work of the sculptor Jawad Salim with his wife Lorna Selim, unveiled in 1961. It was made to commemorate the founding of the Iraqi republic in 1958. Fourteen bronze figures are set along a long travertine wall, to be read from right to left like a line of Arabic script, and their forms draw on ancient Mesopotamian art. It stands above Tahrir Square at the edge of al-Umma Park.
