Taposiris Magna is an ancient town on a ridge between Lake Mariout and the sea, about 45 km west of Alexandria. Its temple of the Ptolemaic period has massive stone walls and a gateway in the Egyptian style, and excavations at the site continue. From the temple walls there are views over the lake and the coast, and the Abusir lighthouse stands nearby. The site is sometimes closed while excavations are under way, so it is best to check before visiting.
