The Abusir lighthouse is a limestone tower of the Ptolemaic period on a ridge above Lake Mariout, about 45 km west of Alexandria. Its square base, octagonal middle and round top are thought to follow the form of the great Pharos of Alexandria, which makes it a small-scale picture of the vanished lighthouse. The tower stands beside the temple ruins of Taposiris Magna, and the town of Burg al-Arab takes its name from it. The site lies just off the coast road west of the city.
