The Sadat Quraysh mosque in Bilbeis is held to be the first mosque built in Egypt, founded in 18 AH as the Muslim army under Amr ibn al-As advanced on the country. It is named after the men of Quraysh who fell in the fighting at Bilbeis. The mosque has been rebuilt over the centuries and stands in the old centre of Bilbeis, one of the oldest towns in the eastern Delta.
