Ibrahim al-Matbuli came from Matbul in Gharbiya and grew up an orphan, selling boiled chickpeas in al-Husayniyya to support his mother and praying every prayer in the nearby mosque of Amir Sharaf al-Din. Mazarat Misr tells that he saw the Prophet ﷺ in his dreams as a boy and later in waking. He built a great zawiya at Birkat al-Hajj and was the master of Ali al-Khawwas. His zawiya and tomb stand at Birkat al-Hajj, beyond al-Marg on the north-eastern edge of Cairo.
