The Great Mosque of Dhamar is the principal historic mosque of the city, and local tradition links its foundation to the early years of Islam and the Companion Dihya al-Kalbi. It has been rebuilt and enlarged many times. The mosque is built of dark stone with white domes and a tall minaret, and its prayer hall has rows of arches and a carved stucco mihrab. It stands in the old centre of Dhamar.
